What is a Breast Reduction?

Women with naturally large breasts often live with a great deal of physical discomfort. Large breasts with excess breast tissue can become heavy and restrictive, causing shoulder and back pain, and even poor posture due to hunched shoulders. Skin irritation under large breasts can occur and deep indentations are often left by bra straps due to the weight of the breasts. Breast reduction surgery can be used to correct these problems, relieve pain, and improve the size, shape, and overall appearance of the breasts.

How Does Breast Reduction Work?

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Dr. Colony begins by making incisions based on your anatomy and cosmetic goals, which may include incisions around the areolas, vertically down the breasts, and/or along the breast crease. Through these incisions, he removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the overall size and weight of the breasts. Liposuction is often used on the sides of the chest to further improve contour and create a more balanced profile. Once the reduction is complete, Dr. Colony reshapes and repositions the remaining breast tissue to achieve a lifted and natural-looking appearance. The incisions are then closed with dissolvable sutures and dressed, and drains may be placed to aid with fluid buildup.

Why Combine Breast Reduction with a Breast Lift?

Breast reduction and breast lift procedures are frequently performed together. While breast reduction focuses on removing excess tissue and alleviating discomfort, a breast lift restores a more youthful and elevated breast position. Combining the two allows Dr. Colony to not only reduce the size of the breasts but also reshape and reposition them for a more proportionate look. This comprehensive approach enhances both comfort and cosmetic outcome, enabling patients to feel lighter, more confident, and better balanced.

Patients will be instructed to wear a surgical bra or compression garment for several weeks post-op to support their breast reduction results. Patients usually experience some discomfort, but this can be managed with pain medications from Dr. Colony in conjunction with Motrin or Aleve. You may need to take care of drains during this time, Your breast reduction scars will fade with time. After the initial swelling subsides, you’ll notice immediate results of a decrease in breast size and improved contours.

What to Expect for Your Results

After breast reduction surgery, most patients experience immediate relief from the weight and strain of large breasts. Initial swelling is normal, but as it subsides, you’ll notice a visible reduction in breast size and a more proportionate, contoured shape. Your results will continue to refine as your body heals, with scars fading over time and your breasts settling into their new position.
