As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen and elasticity. That, in combination with the movement of our facial muscles from constant expression, leads to unwanted fine lines and wrinkles.

If you are looking for an alternative to surgery and younger, more radiant skin, Botox Cosmetic treatment could be for you. In East Lansing, Botox® injections can reduce fine lines and wrinkles located around the mouth, forehead, and eyes, and even treat migraine headaches and excessive sweating.

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable neurotoxin made up of the botulinum toxin protein used to decrease facial muscle function and prevent the formation of wrinkles and deep lines, including severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox’s primary ingredient is botulinum toxin, which blocks nerve signals that cause facial muscles to contract. When injected into targeted areas, it can relax the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, allowing the skin to smooth out over time and leave you with a smoother, younger-looking complexion.

Botox® Candidate

Both men and women who have horizontal forehead lines, lines between the eyebrows (the 11 lines), and lines at the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet) can often benefit from Botox® injections. Ideal candidates will be healthy with realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure and who have not previously had an allergic reaction to the ingredients in the Botox injection formula. The best way to determine if this treatment is right for you is through a consultation with Dr. Colony.

Types of Botox Treatments

Botox can work on a number of different areas of the face and various types of wrinkles and muscle movements. Some of these treatment areas include the following:

Forehead & Bunny Lines

Botox can work wonders on forehead lines and bunny lines that appear on the side of the nose when we smile or scrunch our nose. For forehead lines, Botox is injected into the frontalis muscles, which control your eyebrows and allow you to lift them. This is what’s responsible for forehead creases. For bunny lines, the injections are made directly to the muscles on either side of the nose.

Between Brows & Upper Brows

Struggling with lines between your brows (worry lines) or want to lift your brows? Botox can do that as well. By injecting Botox into the muscles that create those worry lines, we can help you smooth out that area. For the upper brows, Botox is injected right into the ocular muscles. With those muscles relaxed, the forehead muscles will lift the brows, giving you a younger-looking and more awake appearance with only a few injections.

Lip Flip & Gummy Smile

Botox can help you address a gummy smile and a thin upper lip as well. How does it work? For a lip flip, Botox is injected into the muscle responsible for lip movements. This allows the lip to curl upward and give the appearance of a fuller upper lip. For a gummy smile, the formula is injected into the muscles that lift the lip up. By relaxing these muscles, the lip lowers and covers the gums for a more balanced and beautiful smile.

Before Your Botox Procedure

Before your Botox procedure, we’ll want you to avoid alcohol and blood thinners, come to the office with a clean face, stay out of the sun as much as possible, and avoid waxing, shaving, or tweezing the treatment area. You’ll also want to stay hydrated and wear SPF regularly.

Patient Testimonials

Recently had filler and botox done by Dr. Colony and I can’t say enough about how good it looks. I’ve gone a few other places in town and feel like he is by far the best!

I am beyond thrilled with my choice of a plastic surgeon. Dr. Colony is not only incredibly smart and he's got the bedside manner going for him which is quite hard to find in surgeons. I have not only recommended Colony to many friends, but I've actually realized a couple of friends had gone to him before without me realizing.

Was very cautious, and thought long and hard about whether I should or shouldn't. Awesome decision. Should have done it a long time ago. A great accomplishment that couldn't have been done without the help of Dr. Colony and his awesome team. If you're living a minute with any self-doubt or low self-esteem about a certain body part, put your Nikes on and JUST DO IT!

During Your Botox Procedure

At Michigan Plastic Surgery, tiny Botox® injections done exclusively by Dr. Colony in the office in East Lansing, are placed in the facial muscles, and take only a few minutes. The placement and number of injections will be determined by Dr. Colony during your complimentary consultation, and will depend on what your concerns are.

After Your Botox Procedure

Patients may resume normal activities immediately following treatment, and it generally takes three to 14 days for results to take full effect. You may experience some swelling or tenderness at the injection site, but that will subside on its own. For the first few days after treatment, you’ll want to avoid alcohol, blood thinners, excess sun exposure, and strenuous activities. You’ll also want to avoid putting pressure on the treatment areas for at least 24 hours.

What to Expect With Your Botox Results

Results can last anywhere from 3-6 months, though for best results, most patients will have Botox® treatments every four months to maintain and improve their results.

FAQs

What is Botox used for?

The botulinum toxin in Botox relaxes the muscles to smooth out pre-existing wrinkles and prevent the formation of new signs of aging. Along with the injection's ability to prevent wrinkles and lines on the face, Botox can brighten the skin adding a youthful glow to your appearance.

At what age should I start Botox?

Botox works best when preventing future wrinkles from popping up, so starting treatments early is recommended. Patients who are 20 and older will benefit the most from Botox's prevention abilities.

Will my Botox be noticeable?

With proper Botox treatments, the injections will enhance your face without completely altering it. You can enjoy the subtle difference without looking “artificial”.

How long does Botox last?

Each patient is different, so the longevity of Botox ranges. However, patients can expect their Botox to last an average of 3 to 4 months. The initial treatment usually lasts the least amount of time, but the results last longer with the following treatments. Consistency in your Botox schedule is key to ensuring good results and the maintenance of those results.

What do I need to know before getting Botox?

Botox is not a permanent solution against wrinkles and aging. Regular treatments are encouraged not only for the maintenance of results but for improved results every time.

Who should not get Botox?

Individuals who are pregnant, nursing, have a neurological disease, or have an allergy to any of its ingredients should not get Botox.

What happens when you stop Botox?

When you stop receiving Botox injections, your face will simply return to how it looked before. Wrinkles and lines will return.

How much does Botox cost?

The cost of Botox may vary depending on various factors. Please contact our office to discuss pricing.

Is Botox safe?

Yes, Botox injections are typically safe when injected by a licensed and skilled provider.

How does Botox work to reduce wrinkles?

Botox works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contractions, leading to a relaxation of the facial muscles. This reduction in muscle activity smooths out dynamic wrinkles and fine lines, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

How long do the effects of Botox last?

The effects of Botox typically last between three and four months but can vary depending on the individual. As the muscle action gradually returns, lines and wrinkles begin to reappear, requiring follow-up treatments to maintain the results.

Is the Botox injection procedure painful?

Botox injections are not reported as painful. Often, they are described as only a slight pinching sensation. The procedure is quick, usually taking just a few minutes, and requires no anesthesia.

Are there any side effects or risks associated with Botox?

Common side effects of Botox include mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, which usually resolves within a few days. Serious complications are rare when Botox is administered by a qualified professional, but it is important to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.

How often should I get Botox treatments for optimal results?

For optimal results, Botox treatments are typically recommended every three to four months. Regular maintenance treatments can help to sustain the wrinkle-reducing effects and prevent the formation of new lines.
