How Does Breast Augmentation Work? 

The type of implant, placement technique, and incision location are tailored to each patient’s anatomy, goals, and lifestyle. Patients can choose from saline or silicone implants, which differ in material and feel. The implants can be positioned either beneath the chest muscle, under the muscle covering, or directly behind the breast tissue. This procedure can also be part of reconstructive surgery after breast cancer.

Types of Breast Implants

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater after being placed in the breast pocket, allowing for a smaller incision during surgery. They are an excellent choice for patients who prefer a more modest enhancement or prioritize smaller incisions.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel, which mimics the feel of natural breast tissue. Silicone implants are ideal for patients seeking a more natural look and feel, especially in reconstructive cases or for those with less natural breast tissue.

Before Your Breast Augmentation Procedure

During the initial consultation, Dr. Colony will discuss various implant options, incision techniques, and placement methods to tailor the procedure to the patient’s specific needs. Patients will be advised to avoid certain medications and to stop smoking several weeks before surgery to promote optimal healing. Additionally, patients need to arrange for someone to drive them to and from surgery and assist them during the initial recovery period. Dr. Colony will provide detailed pre-operative instructions to help ensure the best possible outcome and a smooth surgical experience.

During Your Breast Augmentation Procedure

Before the breast surgery, Dr. Colony will discuss the varying breast implant types and how they can affect your outcome. Silicone implants tend to be firmer and fuller, and patients with silicone gel implants can expect their breast tissue to feel indistinguishable from the implant. However, saline breast implants are fluid and only filled upon insertion– for this reason, saline implants tend to offer a more subtle result.

During cosmetic surgery, saline or silicone breast implants are surgically placed to the patient’s desired size. Due to the procedure’s nature, East Lansing surgeon Dr. Colony most commonly uses general anesthesia. Incisions are placed either under the breast itself, under the nipple, or through the armpit, depending on a patient’s anatomy, the desired size, and the type of the implant. The implants are inserted either under the pectoral muscles, under the pectoral muscle covering, or behind the breast tissue. 

After Your Breast Augmentation Procedure 

Following the breast augmentation procedure, recovery time often varies from patient to patient, but most patients benefit from 24 to 48 hours of rest followed by 2 weeks of low levels of activity. Swelling, bruising, and general discomfort can be expected during this time and can be managed with ibuprofen and prescription pain medication from Dr. Colony. Patients typically take about 1-2 weeks off of work to properly recover at home and should arrange for someone to drive them home from their procedure and help care for them for a day or two.

What to Expect for Your Breast Augmentation Results

During breast augmentation recovery, the incisions will be taped in a bandage and patients will be instructed to wear a support bra to minimize swelling. It is important to keep the incision sites clean and covered at all times when healing. Patients should avoid certain movements and activities that involve the chest muscles such as heavy lifting and exercise for 2 weeks after surgery. Physical activity should be limited for at least the first two weeks following surgery. Dr. Colony will provide more detailed aftercare instructions and a recovery timeline to patients after their procedure.
