Dr. Lee Colony In: CoolSculpting
Some of the most frequently asked questions we encounter about CoolSculpting at Michigan Plastic Surgery™ are about the details of the technology, whether it really works, and how long the results will last after a treatment session.
We’ll answer all those curiosities and more to show you how CoolSculpting can help you achieve the figure you’ve been wanting.
How Does CoolSculpting Work?
CoolSculpting is a non-surgical body contouring treatment that uses precise, cool temperatures to kill fat cells in a targeted area. It does this by pulling the area receiving treatment between two cooling panels that lower the temperature of the fat to -10 to -13 degrees Celsius, depending on the area being treated, without harming the skin or surrounding tissues. The pinchable fat is held in place with gentle suction for roughly 35 to 60 minutes, and the area will become numb and painless shortly after beginning the treatment.
Because fat cells are more susceptible to cold temperatures than the surrounding blood vessels and skin, they are damaged and die off at the temperature of CoolSculpting. This process is called cryolipolysis.
What Areas Can CoolSculpting Treat?
CoolSculpting is FDA-approved to reduce fat in nine areas of the body:
- Under the chin and jawline
- Thighs
- Abdomen
- Flanks
- Bra line fat
- Back fat
- Buttocks
- Upper arms
It’s important to note that eligible treatment areas should have a pinchable amount of fat for optimal effectiveness, as the vacuum applicator pad cannot suck up all types of fat, such as visceral or internal fat.
Are My CoolSculpting Results Permanent?
In short, yes. In clinical studies, people who received CoolSculpting saw up to a 25% reduction of fat in their treated area. These results take time and often multiple CoolSculpting sessions, but they are real results that can be enjoyed indefinitely.
The appearance of fat due to weight gain is due to the enlargement of individual fat cells throughout the body, not necessarily the generation of new fat cells. In the same way, losing weight creates a reduction in fat cell size, not necessarily in getting rid of whole cells.
CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss procedure, and certain people may not be eligible due to weight or health reasons. That’s why the best way to know if you can benefit from this non-invasive procedure is to schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon prior to committing to treatment.
If you gain weight after successful CoolSculpting treatment, your body will distribute it proportionally, meaning that although your results will be altered, you can still enjoy the proportions of your enhanced figure.
