Otoplasty in Lansing

Large, misshapen, or prominent ears can have devastating consequences on self-esteem for people of all ages. If you or your child struggle with large ears, there is hope and the problem can be corrected through a surgical procedure called otoplasty, sometimes known as ear pinning. Otoplasty can be used to correct the position, shape, proportion, and even the structure of the ear. It is a surgery that can be performed on adults of all ages and children as young as five or six years of age. In fact, it is highly recommended to treat the problem as young as possible to help improve your child’s self-esteem and avoid potential psychological distress as the years go by.

An Otoplasty Surgery

Otoplasty is a procedure that can be performed under local or general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Incisions are typically made inconspicuously behind the ear. In some cases, incisions must be made at the front of the ear, but in this case, they are hidden within the natural folds. Through these incisions the ears can be repositioned and reshaped. Permanent sutures are placed to help secure the ears in their new position.

Recovery After Otoplasty

Recovery following otoplasty requires the full time use of a compression headband for the first week, and then at night for three weeks. Though swelling and pain is common, discomfort can be managed through the use of painkillers, and patients are typically able to resume light activity within just a few days.
