Sometimes, a healthy diet and regular exercise are simply not enough when it comes to achieving a slim, well-toned body. Excess skin on the body is a problem that affects many people, and it can create a less-than-desirable body shape and silhouette.
There are a number of factors that can contribute to loose, sagging skin. Genetics, the aging process, and significant weight loss can all cause the skin to lose its elasticity and firmness. A lack of elasticity combined with gravity can cause the skin to become heavy and saggy. This loose, excess skin may be particularly troubling for people who have experienced extreme weight loss either through diet and exercise or through weight loss surgery. Even after the weight is gone, bodies cannot look their best with extreme amounts of excess skin.
What is a Body Lift?
A body lift is a surgical procedure that is used to re-contour the trunk and lower body by removing unwanted excess skin to reveal a firmer, more well-toned shape. A body lift is commonly combined with other body contouring surgeries like the arm lift, thigh lift, tummy tuck, or liposuction. Although many non-surgical body contouring procedures exist, the body lift is the most transformative option and can achieve long-term results with the right diet and exercise routine.
Is a Body Lift Right for Me?
A body lift can be a great option if you’re bothered by excess skin and stubborn fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Additionally, you can benefit from a body lift if you experience symptoms from excess skin like chafing or rash. In order to be considered a good candidate for a body lift, you should be at or near your ideal weight and have maintained it for at least six months. You should also be in overall good health and have realistic expectations about what a body lift can achieve. Dr. Colony will discuss your medical history to determine if you’re healthy enough to undergo surgery.
Body Lift Options
The body lift can be combined with many other procedures for a whole-body transformation. Dr. Colony can help you determine if the following are appropriate for your goals.
Arm Lift
An arm lift slims the upper arms, removing excess skin and fat. Dr. Colony can remove loose skin using an incision on the inside of the arm or the back of the arm. An arm lift can reveal more toned, slender arms without hanging wings of skin.
Thigh Lift
The thigh lift removes excess skin from the thighs and hips. It’s an ideal combination with the body lift or lower body lift since it can more effectively contour the lower body. Incisions are placed on the insides of the thighs or around the hip bones. Using these incisions, Dr. Colony can remove excess fat and skin for slimmer, more proportional thighs.
Tummy Tuck
The tummy tuck removes hanging skin from the lower stomach while also getting rid of fat and repairing stretched abdominal muscles. It uses an incision across the pubic area where Dr. Colony will excise fat and extra skin. This creates a smoother, flatter abdomen.
Liposuction
Liposuction is the most effective way to remove external fat from areas of the body. It uses small entry points in the skin to gain access to stubborn fat with a surgical vacuum, removing it. It can be used with lift procedures like the body lift to further contour the area and tighten excess skin.
Patient Testimonials
Before Your Body Lift Procedure
Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Colony will meet with you during a consultation to discuss your goals and surgical plan. You’ll be asked to prepare by avoiding certain medications, maintaining a stable weight, and undergoing bloodwork. You’ll be given details such as your surgery date and how to find compression garments for your recovery.
During Your Body Lift Procedure
Dr. Colony performs the body lift under general anesthesia for patients in the Okemos, Brighton, and East Lansing areas. During the procedure, incisions are made based on the areas to be targeted. These areas typically include the buttocks, hips, thighs, flanks, and abdomen. The size of the incisions will depend on the amount of excess skin in the area. Once the skin is removed, it can be reshaped and tightened. Dr. Colony will close your incisions with specialized sutures, taking steps to prevent visible scarring. You’ll discuss your surgical plan with Dr. Colony during your consultation, so you know what to expect.
After Your Body Lift Procedure
Recovery from a body lift can take 3-4 weeks of dedicated rest. During this time, it’s important to avoid extensive activity and focus on healing. You’ll be given detailed aftercare instructions by our team including details on taking your prescribed medications and how to manage any drains. It’s important to wear your compression garments over the area as much as possible to reduce swelling and help the skin adhere to the new contours. You’ll check in with Dr. Colony regularly to ensure your results are progressing as intended.
What to Expect From Your Body Lift Results
Within 1-2 months, you’ll see a noticeable improvement in your body’s contours and overall shape. It can take up to a year for scars to settle into their final appearance, and we can recommend products to help fade them more effectively. With the right active lifestyle, you can enjoy permanent results from your body lift procedure with Dr. Colony.
