What to Expect From Laser Hair Removal

Dr. Lee Colony  In: Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is one of the best options for reducing unwanted hair with long-term results. As you schedule your consultation, however, it’s important to know that you’ll need to take some specific steps for best results. Although you’ll receive specific instructions from your technician, here’s what to expect before, during, and after your laser hair removal treatment with Dr. Colony.

Before Your Treatment

It’s important to start preparing for your procedure about four weeks before your treatment date. Begin by canceling all your waxing sessions. If you have to shave during this preparation period, use a razor! Furthermore, try to stay away from direct sunlight. Tanning and sun damage can make laser treatments less effective because of the way they interact with pigments in the skin. As your treatment day approaches,  shave treatment area with a few days’ advance so a visible hair shaft can be targeted with the laser handpiece. Don’t pluck or wax! This means the laser will have very little hair shaft to work with.

During Your Treatment

On the day of your procedure, you should use only basic, unscented skincare products on the treatment area. Avoid using deodorants or anything strongly scented. If you’re getting treatment on your face, don’t wear makeup and use a simple moisturizer instead of your regular regimen. At the start of your treatment, the skin will be thoroughly cleansed and made ready for the laser handpiece. You should wear loose-fitting clothing to ensure your technician can have easy access to your treatment area.

After Your Treatment

It’s common to have some redness and swelling in the first few days after each treatment. You’ll receive instructions on how to care for the area with the right skincare products to keep your skin soothed and healthy. It’s extremely important to wear sunscreen on the treatment area in the days following. Things should normalize within a few days. Nonetheless, you should avoid taking hot water showers or engaging in heavy activities. Try to follow this recommendation for the next forty-eight hours after each treatment. It’s normal for the skin to become sensitive immediately after each session. Sensitivity often lasts for a day or two at the most. Keep the treated area cool and refrain from applying any scented or perfumed products during this period.

Additional Treatments

While laser hair removal is the best option for reducing unwanted body hair, a single treatment session usually isn’t enough to achieve complete results. It takes multiple sessions for the hair to be completely removed from the target area because of the natural hair growth cycle. This means you’ll need to take the appropriate steps for each treatment session.
